Back to Seattle we shall go…

Pier_66-147 copyYou may have noticed that I have been absent for a bit on this space. We are in the middle of a busy few weeks and months before our transition back to life in Seattle. We are selling, packing, preparing, and saying goodbyes.

We are taking Higgins, our beloved German Shepherd, with us as well. I am thankful to have our little Zambian family of 4 around me as we move back. I am very sad to leave as I love Zambia so much. We will arrive back to Seattle in the middle of June. Our family is anxiously awaiting our arrival and we will be happy to greet them as well.

I know that Zambia will always live in our hearts and if God would allow it we pray that we can return soon.

2013 – A new year and recap of the last few months

Happy New Year!
If anybody is still confused where we are, we are still living in Zambia and will be here for a bit longer. Here is a longer update to catch you up to speed on the Menenberg happenings!

Adoption Day at Court

The end of 2012 was a whirlwind for us. We celebrated Nathaniel coming home forever on 16 October, 2012 and we christened him with the name above. Now, he refuses to be called “Angelo” and always corrects people (including Daddy and Mama) to say “Eh-faniel.”

Throughout the whole adoption process, all of the major moments (Nathaniel coming home, our “Gotcha’ Day,” and getting our US visa) were completely last-minute, stressful, and taught us that God was in control the entire time.

On Tuesday 23 October, we received our travel visa for Nathaniel at 5pm – 4 hours before we were supposed to travel! We were so thankful to the US Embassy for making allowance for Nathaniel to travel back for his MRI and other medical appointments for his hydrocephalus. « Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s to 4 wonderful years being married to the love of my life, my best friend, and the father of my son!! I love you, Ben! Happy 4th anniversary, my darling husband.

Wedding Day! – Seattle, WA

1 year! – Whidbey Island, WA

2 years! – Orcas Island, WA

3 Years! – San Diego, California

4 Years! – Lusaka, Zambia

{The last photo was from our last childless night together and an early anniversary celebration at (the only) fancy restaurant in Lusaka. We’re still adjusting to being new parents. Whew! Parenting a child isn’t as easy as it looks! My parents just spent a week with us cooking and cleaning for us, which was a huge help – thanks Daddy and Mama!! Also, thank you to everyone for your love, support, and understanding as we adjust to being a family of 3.}

{Post by the Husband} A New Definition of Cold

While friends and family back home in Seattle are enjoying the 3 months of sunshine that Seattle receives each year (at least in theory. Juneuary anyone?), Laura and I are in the midst of winter here in Zambia. According to the typical Seattle person, winter brings images of 40 degrees (F), grey skies, and rain. In Zambia, winter means night-time temperatures which dip to as low as perhaps 40-45 degrees (F) and daytime temperatures around 65 degrees (F) and usually sunny. To a Seattle person, this no doubt sounds like heaven – 65 degrees and sun?!? That would be a great Seattle summer day.

The funny thing about living someplace new – Laura and I no longer think 65 degrees and sun is warm. In fact, you will likely find us wearing a sweater and even a winter coat these days (see above picture). Sometimes, we dress with more layers than the locals. I expect our Seattle friends are incredulous, but what can we say?

To be fair, houses here do not have insulation, so it can be chilly inside. But the reality is, we are no longer warm with 65 degree (F) weather. It will stay chilly until about August. September will bring temperatures of above 90 degrees (F), and at this point I say none too soon. Bring on the heat!

{Wife Note} You can tell we’ve been married for almost 4 years because we are dressed nearly identically!

See ya’, Seattle!

We’ll be traveling this weekend and will be back here once we’re settled in Zambia next week. It’s an exciting time for us and we would appreciate your thoughts and prayers. Cheers!

Many goodbyes (4 days till Zambia!)

This last week was full of goodbyes, farewells, and “au revoir”s. We had many special last moments with our church community group, a party with close friends, and Ben and my family. Your words, cards, and presence meant so much. If we didn’t get to see you, I’m sorry we missed you.

Here are some photos from our celebrations:

Laura's family

Community Group (the latter half, as some had already left)

Friends, group A

Friends, group B

Our time of reflection and prayer with our loved ones was something we will remember for a long time. Ben played this song for everyone and I think it sums up how we feel about going to Africa:
