{Post by the Husband} Book Review: Great Expectations

{In lieu of our March book reviews, Ben gives us his opinion of a recent read}

A few weeks ago, Laura and I had the opportunity to attend a theatre performance at the American school here in Lusaka where the students put on a good performance of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations”.  Motivated by their performance, I decided to re-read the book for myself (I read it many years ago in high school or college).

To put it concisely: Great Expectations is an amazing book that chronicles the life of Pip through his rise from poverty to riches and how this rise affects his character and relationships around him.  Pip discovers who his true friends are and learns humility through his trials, trials which ultimately lead to the redemption of himself and others around him.

Dickens does a masterful job of creating memorable characters (Miss Havisham, Estella, Pip, Joe, etc) and not wasting a single scene or moment in the story.  As the story develops, the reader appreciates how each earlier scene has been formative for helping to tell the story.  Further, Dickens deals with weighty issues such as bitterness, forgiveness, regret, and redemption.  I had a hard time putting the book down and must say I was sad when the story was over because I enjoyed it so much.

This may be stating the obvious, but some books are considered classics for a reason.  If you’re looking for a good book to read (and free if you have a Kindle device!), check out Great Expectations.  You won’t be disappointed.
